Let’s take sneak-peak at one of the gorgeous items that will be available in the Elite Swag Bags that will be auctioned off during the live auction at get Hitched Give Hope this Thursday! Karen Sheldon with The Flower Suite has created handmade cake toppers which are beyond adorable!!!
Karen, tell us a little about your work…
I have been a Floral Designer for 10 years. In the beginning I designed weddings part-time from home while working full-time. From Seattle I moved to Los Angeles where I was fortunate to land a job at the fabulous Markʼs Garden “florist to the stars” where I learned invaluable methods and techniques. My love of design, color and style has led me in careers as an interior designer, photographer and retail stylist over the past 25 years but my passion has always been flowers! Now living back in the Northwest I opened up shop full-time!
What do you love most about your work?
So much is rewarding when you have a creative job for example in my case being surrounded by gorgeous fragrant blooms is definitely a bonus but I would have to say creating beautiful one of a kind events for families to cherish is what I love most about my work.
What drew you to Get Hitched Give Hope?
In the end family is what is most important and by reuniting family members one last time or providing the means for families to vacation in a spectacular destination one last time are stand alone moments not otherwise achieved if it were not for GHGH. Iʼm honored to be a part of something so unique and important.
How are you participating in Get Hitched Give Hope this year?
I will be decorating two of the four very large and spectacular items in the ballroom…enough said I donʼt want to give it away! And I will be donating my one of a kind handmade fabric and jewel adorned cake topper birds for the 10 Elite Swags.
What inspires you?
Tiny dried saffron stigmas, the beauty and detail of a rose without itʼs petals, the color waves of grease in water, stitched leather camera bags from the 70ʼs and everything within sight on a walk in the woods.
Why do couples choose you for their floral design?
Perhaps itʼs because Iʼll suggest “why not” when combining unique and unusual elements. Itʼs great when their response is “love it…I never would have thought of that!” Being open to new and different ideas can certainly personalize their event but making it personal and unique makes it super special.
If you could pass on your advice to an engaged couple, what three tips would you give?
1. Youʼve heard it before and Iʼll say it again “you canʼt please everyone all of the time”. If there is ever an occasion this advice rings true it is on your wedding day. Make it a day you want and not what others want or expect from you.
2. Make a choice to be either very specific with your vendors or give them creative freedom and be at peace with whatever you decide.
3. Be present.
Thanks Karen! How can we keep in touch?
