What’s your favorite part of working with Get Hitched Give Hope?

The camaraderie between vendors, seeing all of our clients excited to give while getting amazing things for their wedding, and of course the warm fuzzy feelings of fulfillment are huge in my heart and what drives all of the hard work we do. I’m a co-founder and VP of Marketing, so of COURSE I love it all! Through loads of tears and a whole lot of jumping up and down when the night ends at our big auction, just when we’ve realized we’ve blasted our goal, and it hits home exactly WHAT we’re able to do with this money: THAT is the feeling that drives all of the hard work. THAT is the feeling that we strive for, and it’s absolutely priceless.


You own  :: Laurel McConnell Photography, a Seattle based wedding photography company. What drew you to your job?

I was in school for psychology at the UW, and took a summer course on photography. While it was absolutely opposite of what I thought it would be (there was a LOT of math involved and I must have ruined 3 pairs of pants in the darkroom!), I was hooked and changed career paths, switching schools so that I could learn how to be an artist for a living! I finished school in 2001 with a photography degree (and partial psych and soc degrees, but hey, who uses those anyways? ;). Opening a business was simply a requirement of being a photographer for my day job- I am awful at the business part. I opened my virtual doors that summer, and through more trial and error than I care to admit and a major industry shift (helllloooo digital capture!), I am still hanging out over here in my little corner of quirk and fun, loving every minute of what I do. Except for when it’s tax time. No one likes that. Except accountants, I guess.


Tell us your FAVORITE part of weddings!! It can be something unique or it can be something you specialize in – we want to share it with the world!

We LOVE having fun while shooting. My favorite part of the day is that which we spend with the bride and groom making some fun portraits before the ceremony- this is one of the only times during the day that they get to spend time together before the crazy hubbub begins. Having a great little photo adventure to document their personalities and how much they love each other is what makes us buzz with excitement!!!


Do you have any insider secrets to tell our brides to make their planning (and enjoyment of their wedding) easier?

Plan for extra time during each step of the day to keep things running smoothly and stress-free!!! I know that “2 hours of portraits” seem like WAY too long, but time goes so fast, especially when you’re changing locations, waiting for a family member, late on hair, fixing a seam, or just plain HAVING FUN! We love to help our clients with their photography timeline, allowing at least 45 minutes for bride and groom pictures, 45 for wedding party or VIP friends, and 30 for those must-have family shots. Some of our clients even love photography so much that they plan for a secondary location or portrait time when the evening light is super sweet, and we escape for just a few minutes to capture some really beautiful moments.
