You may remember Lisa’s story:  On February 14th, 2009 Get Hitched Give Hope had the privilege of photographing Lisa’s dream wedding.  Her wish was for the wedding she never had – and that is exactly what she received.  She was able to celebrate life, her love for her husband of 20+ years, and share it with all of her friends, family, and three beautiful daughters.

On January 6th, 2010 Lisa lost her battle with cancer.  Here is the message we received:
“Last night at 11:45, Lisa lost her battle with Breast Cancer. A lot of you were instrumental in making her wish come true last year and gave her a wedding on Valentines day. I want to thank you so much for being a part of her life. It may have been for a short time but it meant the world to her.  Thank you for what you do and for who you are.

Here are a few images from the day, and if you would like to see the story as originally published click HERE or HERE.

In case you missed it on Facebook, here is the fabulous video by Leaning Wolf Productions of GHGH 2009! We love the way the video captures the fun, excitement, and caring generosity of the evening. Everyone had a fantastic time, and you can really see it. Take a look, and be sure to check out Leaning Wolf’s other projects, too!

With our 2010 event beginning to take shape, we wanted to look back at 2009 one more time. Here are some of the great images of the evening from photographer Jeff LaPlante!  Look for some big announcements about this year coming soon, and follow our Facebook page to see even more photos.ghgh_2009_012ghgh_2009_013ghgh_2009_104ghgh_2009_146ghgh_2009_223ghgh_2009_296ghgh_2009_018ghgh_2009_103ghgh_2009_241ghgh_2009_269ghgh_2009_151ghgh_2009_033ghgh_2009_250ghgh_2009_193

Reason #9 – By planning your wedding at our swanky event – you’ll be granting wishes!!  (AMAZING!)

So I know you’re all crossing your fingers, but the winner of the first fascinator (the sparkly one) is Sara Bauleke, aka @BellaNotteDC on twitter. And the winner of the second fascinator (the feathery one) is Amanda Howse Butler! Congratulations to both of you and thanks for your comments and tweets!

So we’ve been posting a lot lately about what the big night is going to be like…the goods, the deals, the sponsors, the fun. But there’s a bigger reason we’re putting this whole night together, and that’s because we want to raise money for the Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation.  So we asked Brenda Chovanak, the National Tour Director for Brides Against Breast Cancer who has been working with Making Memories since 2004, to tell us a bit about who she is and what the organization does.

How long have you been with the organization, and what kind of work do you do for them?
We’ve all heard, “be careful what you wish for”.   I came to the organization like many others have; wearing a pink volunteer tee shirt.  I volunteered to work at my first  Brides Against Breast Cancer wedding gown sale in 2004, looked around and found myself saying, “I wish I could get more involved”.

Although I don’t have the free time to do it now, I enjoy restoring antique wedding gowns and in June of 2005 I was asked to help launch their Antique and Retro Gown Division.  I live and breathe my work for the organization now, as the National Tour Director for Brides Against Breast Cancer.  I travel the country, playing dress up with the brides and getting silly with our volunteers to raise money to grant wishes and to educate about breast cancer.

What drew you to this organization?
There are so many wonderful organizations raising money to find a cure for breast cancer, I found myself wondering, “What about the individuals for which a cure won’t come in time?” Think of all of life’s simple moments, that so many others take for granted, means everything to someone who’s been told they are out of time.  To help them forget the realities of the disease – even for a moment — and make memories to leave behind is a very noble thing that all of us can do…right now.

What is your favorite part of working with Making Memories?
Each day I’m surrounded by people who make the world a better place, simply because they got out of bed that morning and walk on the face of our planet.

What is the Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation?
Here’s the standard reply:  ABOUT MAKING MEMORIES BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION™
Headquartered in Portland, OR, Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation™ is a non-profit organization dedicated to granting wishes, including memory-making events, for stage IV breast cancer patients, while continuing to support, educate and increase awareness of breast cancer.  Since its founding in 1998, Making Memories has developed various fundraising divisions including Brides Against Breast Cancer,™ Pink Envelope Project, Quilters Against Breast Cancer and Diamonds for Dreams.  These divisions support wish fulfillment and various educational programs of the foundation.  Each year, Making Memories receives thousands of wedding gowns from various manufacturers, designers, retailers and individuals for the Brides Against Breast Cancer™ Nationwide Tour of Gowns, making it the organization’s primary fundraising activity.  Making Memories has received national media coverage including Oprah, MSNBC, CNN, Newsweek, TIME, Redbook, Brides, Modern Bride, Martha Stewart Weddings, Family Circle, Woman’s Day and Shape magazine among others. For more information about Making Memories, please visit www.makingmemories.org.

Hey brides, there’s a big Brides Against Breast Cancer gown sale in Tacoma this weekend! Like us, BABC raises money for the Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation, and in addition to having gorgeous gowns at unreal low prices, they’re a TON of fun. The sale is this Saturday and Sunday at the Greater Tacoma Convention & Trade Center (at 1500 Broadway, Tacoma, WA), and admission is free unless you want to get a VIP power-hours early entry ticket. Those are $20 and give you access to the sale a full two hours before everyone else. Sounds like a good idea to me…click here to get yours.

The amazing Liz Navarro of Gown Diva Consulting was a key part of last year’s Get Hitched, Give Hope. Not only did she contribute a fabulous gown consulting package to our auction, but she styled all the models displaying wedding gowns throughout the night. They were completely stunning, and we’re so glad to have her with us again this year.

Tell us about yourself !
My name is Liz Navarro, a bridal fashion expert with Gown Diva Consulting. My company includes bridal business consulting and bridal fashion styling. Currently, I’m working with an upcoming bridal designer in NYC! It’s truly an exciting and rewarding job working behind the scenes as well as one on one with brides, sharing my knowledge and insider tips!

What do you love about your work?
I love the art of a bridal gown and truly fell in love with bridal fashions during an internship in London. I especially love helping brides look absolutely gorgeous on their wedding day, by simply sharing my knowledge acquired over the years!

What drew you to Get Hitched, Give Hope?
I’ve always wanted to somehow be involved with giving back, especially since I’ve been personally affected by the devastating effects of cancer.

What is your favorite product that you offer?
Free first style consultation. I love to talk bridal!! It’s truly fun to meet with brides and get them started on their hunt for the perfect gown.  If they hire me great! If not, at least they have the tools needed to start shopping.

How are you participating in the event?
I wanted to do something special this year and decided to ask designer Anne Barge if she would like to participate in donating a bridal gown for an auction item with my fashion styling services. Anne is not only a great designer, but she is a fabulous lady!

Anything else you’d like to share?
It’s a honor to be involved with the classiest bridal event in Seattle!
